Biography: Jamie Hoover

My duties in The Spongetones the last 31 plus years include songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, producer, recording engineer, arranger, bassist, sometimes drummer, and other various musical noises. I have recorded and produced all 12 records for The Spongetones, with reviews in Rolling Stone, Billboard, Trouser Press, Goldmine, and many publications. The Spongetones are currently on our own "Loaded Goat Records" label in the US and are available on Sony and Airmail Records in Japan.

My most recent project is a duo record called "English Afterthoughts" with my dear friend and fellow Spongetone Steve Stoeckel. We’re working currently on our next CD entitled "The Next Big Thing".

I wrote, recorded, and produced the song "Skinny" with The Spongetones, heard every night on the late night news program ABC World News Now.

I have several solo releases:

"Most Loved Melodies" available at cdbaby.com. 24 tracks, basically two from each album (Spongetones, Van DeLeckis, Paparazzi, and solo "Coupons" CD) and all four songs from "Lind Me Four"!

"Lind Me Four"-a 4 song tribute to Bob Lind is available for download-only now, through itunes.

"Coupons Questions and Comments” is available at cdbaby.com. It was my first solo cd.

I did a full-length critically-acclaimed pop record entitled “Paparazzi” with fellow popster and alt-country star Bill Lloyd. All drums on this record are performed by Dennis Diken (The Smithereens)

I did two full length well-received power pop CD's as one half of The Van DeLecki's with partner Bryan Shumate. These two discs are entitled "Letters From The Desk OF Count S. Van DeLecki" and" Ebum Shoobum Shoobum".

All my recordings are available for download at itunes.

I was one of the founding members of The Happy Eggs along with Gil Ray, Murphy Moore, and Kenny Phillips-and later Bobby Gray. We made a giant 45 on white yinyl and the Wake Up EP. We also did a number of other unreleased recordings. I produced all of these along with Mark Williams for OVO Productions. The Wake Up EP is available on Itunes. We reffered to our music as nightmare music. Very punk and slightly progressive. I still love this stuff.

I played guitar for The Woods (Terry Anderson, Jack Cornell and David Enloe) out of Raleigh, NC for 3 1/2 years steady. I recorded a large number of very good demos at my home studio in Clover, SC (The Washateria). Sadly, these are still unreleased. I had a blast with these guys and love them all dearly. We did a lot of damn rocking shows.

I have toured, playing keyboards/guitar/mandolin and lap steel for Hootie and The Blowfish (sitting in For Peter Holsapple) on 3 different occasions.

I have also toured and recorded for over 25 years as guitarist for producer/recording artist Don Dixon and his wife, singer/recording artist Marti Jones, touring most of the United States, Canada, and Europe with them.

I toured as bass player for The Smithereens. I subbed for Mike Meseros for over a year, from May of 1997 until June of 1998 as a regular player.

I toured as guitarist/backup vocalist for Graham Parker as a member of "The Small Clubs" in support of the "Burning Questions" Capitol release, making an appearance with Parker on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show". I also recorded with that band during the tour for a Richard Thompson tribute "Beat The Retreat", the song "The Madness Of Love".

I recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis for a few weeks as the bass player for the Orange Humble Band (Australia) with producer Mitch Easter on guitar, Jody Stephens (Big Star) on drums, Ken Stringfellow (Posies) on vocals.

I was the singing voice for the dog "Pido" on Raggs Kids Club Band (Australia)-and the song writer of "Stand Back Brain Attack".II

I worked as lead guitarist in LA for the legendary Bob Lind, the writer of "Elusive Butterfly". This was filmed and recorded for the DVD "A Perspective" available at boblind.com.

I live in Monroe,NC, where I still work on many indie recording projects, write and record music and keep my wife Linda and all our animals company.

Born 2/11/56 in Charlotte, NC.

Other Recording Background

Worked as chief engineer for Bob Davis Sound Productions in the late 70’s. Later, chief engineer as Davis became partners with Thurlow Spur (PTL Club musical director) for Studio 90.

Incorporated with Mark Williams to form a production team called OVO Productions, Ltd. Produced dozens of pop, metal, folk, and reggae albums. I would have never developed as a producer without the help, advice and guidance of Mark. He is still an inspiration and a dear friend to me. Mark had much to do with finding the sound of The Spongetones, conceptually and sonically. I can never repay him for all of his help and wisdom.

Also: co-produced album projects for Island and Enigma Records with Don Dixon at Reflection Studios, Charlotte, NC.
